Frequently Asked Questions
The following items are frequently asked questions that we have received. We update this list regularly so check back if you have any further questions, or visit our Support Forums.
Q. Is there any limitation in the trial version that I need to be aware of?
A. No. The only limitation is that the trial version will work for 30 days from the date of installation. After 30 days has expired, you can either remove the software or purchase it. Obviously we hope that you purchase it
Q. Will this work with Outlook Express?
A. No. It will work with full Outlook versions - Outlook XP, 2003 and 2007.
Q. Will this work with Windows Vista?
A. Yep. We've tested Split Personality with Windows 2000, XP and Windows Vista. The installer has been designed to support the UAC of Vista and make life easy. We would suggest that to avoid any problems with installation or registration, that you run the installer with Administration rights, disable UAC, and make sure you are logged into your system as a user who has Administration rights.
Q. Will this work with the RibbonX interface style of Outlook 2007?
A. Yes. You will see a new group added to the standard mail toolbar called 'Send with Personality'. This isn't the case with Outlook 2000, XP or 2003 where you get a floating toolbar that you can install where you want it to
Q. Where do I create Personalities to use for my emails?
A. Personalities are created and managed in Outlook's own Options. This is typically found under the Tools menu in Outlook. When you open Options, you'll see a TAB installed called Split Personality. Just go into that tab, and start to add new personalities there. You can also change or delete personalities that you have created at anytime through the Options.
Q. How do I add multiple lines to the signature section of my Personalities?
A. Outlook unfortunately won't let us use the ENTER key as it maps it to the APPLY button. To drop down to the next line, hold down the CTRL key and press ENTER.
Q. Does this work with HTML emails or using Word as the email editor?
A. We've really designed this to work with PLAIN TEXT emails. This is the most common email format used and is the most likely email that will get through spam filters on mail servers. However Split Personality should work fine with HTML or Rich Text emails. The only exception is that if you are trying to embed HTML tags into your HTML emails, the < > tag characters are translated to literals (<, etc.) which means that you will not be able to embed tags into your signature lines.
Q. If I upgrade the software to a new version, will it clear out my existing personalities that I have created?
A. No. Your personalities and licensing information is retained and protected from installation to installation.
Q. Why does it show 'Sent on Behalf of' and my original email address on outgoing emails?
A. The main reason is the way that email servers work. When you use Split Personality to send emails, it doesn't require that you have multiple different mail servers that you send through (the SMTP server). This makes setting up multiple Personalities a breeze. But when you send an email to someone and it is received by their mail server, most mail servers have SPAM filters on them. The most common check that Spam filters on email servers do is to check that the mail server that sent an email was the designated server for the email address that the email is announcing itself under.
For example if you have 2 email addresses, john@smith.com and john@jones.com, and you want to send through the email server you are attached to for the domain smith.com, when a mail server receives that email it looks up against the DNS information for the domain smith.com what the authorized mail server is for that domain (through a MX record). If the email server that sent it wasn't that server, there is a 90% chance that the email will be rejected and blocked by that mail server.
We get around this by utilizing a little known trick in Outlook and that is the property 'Send on Behalf of'. By using this, it tells the receiving mail server to treat the email as being from the personality that it was sent under, but to assume that the SPAM filtering applies to the original account it was sent through. Hence, no email blockage.
The downside of this is that if you look closely at the email received by the end user, it will show <your personality email> sent on behalf of <your actual email>. Our studies have shown that recipients of emails this way normally don't look to this information, but if you need a 100% hidden original email address, then we can't help you. The only way of doing that is to create multiple Email Accounts in Outlook (you'll need to contact Microsoft on how to do this), and have each account setup to use a mail server specifically associated with the domain of the email address you want to send through. This is a MUCH more complex and tricky thing to set up, but solve the problem. It assumes you have a relatively advanced knowledge of SMTP and email standards on the Internet, and SPAM filtering technologies though.
Customers who buy Split Personality are typically those that are just everyday computer users that don't understand, have time or want to deal with the complexity of email account setup like this. For them, we feel we are an ideal and welcomed solution when they have to wear many, many hats.
